Changes In Midlife and How Exercise Can Help (Menopause and Fitness Tips for Women)

Updated: Jul 12, 2022

At what age is exercise most important? Of course, exercising at any age is encouraged however as we mature, it is even more important. It has been revealed that the 40s is the time of life when it is most important to have an exercise routine. During middle age, our bodies naturally start to decline. Our muscles begin to lose mass and elasticity. This also slows our metabolism and makes it easier to gain weight. (familydoctor.org)

For women over the age of 40 and as they move toward the peri-menopause and menopause stage, it is important to incorporate a consistent fitness program. This time in a woman’s life can be challenging from a psychological, mental/emotional and physical standpoint. Having an understanding of what is happening, how to cope and finding solutions to help navigate this challenging time is important.

For some, routinely exercising does not come easy. However, I challenge you to change your thinking when it comes to the subject. Instead of thinking of it as a chore…a dreaded thing to do…shift your thinking and view it as a luxury, something you do...just for you. Think of it as your time…a time for you to temporarily dismiss all that is going on in your life, a time to if only for 30 minutes, let go of your responsibilities…and focus only on you. It is your time to focus on your mind, body and your soul!

It has been determined that exercise may help control a number of physical and psychological problems and changes associated with menopause and midlife, including depression, weight gain, loss of muscle mass and bone density, the risk of coronary artery disease, and possibly vasomotor symptoms. The basic prescription of aerobic exercise (20 to 60 minutes 3 to 5 days per week) and strength training (2 to 3 days per week) should be adapted to the patient's medical condition, fitness level, motivation, experience, and preferences (NIH).
